Goddard 33, Rio Rancho 25
The Goddard Rockets led only 12-6 at the half and managed to keep the Ram's at bay with big defensive plays inside the red-zone for most the first half. Goddard Running Back David Anaya scored the Rocket's first touchdown of the season and would score four total touchdowns on the night, his final touchdown came when he broke loose on a 90-yard touchdown run. Goddard Quarterback Ryan Greene threw for a touchdown pass and ran for over 100-yards. David Strickland and Bishop Whiteside each had big defensive games and the Rocket's defense forced Ram's quarterback Jason Fitzpatrick to throw two picks on the night, one which was a pick six for a touchdown. The Rams scored a last minute touchdown to cut the final score to a touchdown.
Clovis 20, Alamogordo 19
The Clovis Wildcats were trailing 19-14 with just minutes remaining, but in the final minutes Clovis Quarterback Tre Orozco's pass was deflected and caught by Johnathan Johnson for the game winning touchdown. The Wildcats finished the game with 371-yards of offense, while Alamogordo had 193-yards of offense. Orozco thew for 88-yards and ran for 135-yards on teh ground. Johnathan Johnson ran for 96-yards on the night as well.
La Cueva 16, Volcano Vista 6
In the Metro Area game of the week, the Volcano Vista Hawks jumped to a 6-2 lead, before La Cueva scored 14 unanswered points to win their first game under new head coach Ed Lucero. The game had over 200 total penalty yards and it was Erich Stabile who came up with the game changing play returning a fumble for a touchdown 38-yards for La Cueva's first touchdown of the 2011 season.
Cleveland 49, Bel Air 12
The Storm looked worth the pre-season hype during their opener and it was New Mexico State Commit Cole Gautsche that helped the Storm out to a quick lead throwing for 300-yards (14-22) and four touchdown passes. Three of those touchdown passes went to 6-foot-2 receiver Reeece White. White caught touchdown passes of 80 and 68-yards on the night. Cleveland Running Back Romell Jordan ran for 110-yards on the night and junior Steven Steele had an interception.
Carlsbad 28, Roswell 24
In a southeast thriller, the Cavemen survived a week one scare from the Roswel Coyotes in the final minutes. "On a positive note we won a football game," head coach "It was way more dramatic than we wanted it to be," Coach Arrington told the Carlsbad Argus. Eric Galino, Carlsbad's all-state running back ran for two scores and had 128-yards of offense. Roswell scored late when Quarterback James Singleton hit Richard Medrano to make cut the lead to four, but in the end, Carlsbad would hang on.
Belen 48, Deming 21
The Belen Eagles lost their three headed attack from last year, but the Eagles looked like the Eagles rolling past Deming in their opener. Belen's Xaiver Armijo and Quarterback Nick Kurtz each had big games and Zach Martin retuned a kick-off 82-yards for a touchdown. Deming was led by quartebrack Anthony Ramirez who ran for 106-yards on the night and also caught for 81-yards as a receiver. Deming played without 6-foot-0, 241 pound Reggie Mackey as Mackey will have to sit out one game this season because he recently transfered from Hobbs.
Artesia 35, Lovington 14
The Artesia Bulldogs had their way with Lovington yet again winning by three scores, but it was not the Artesia offense that shined, it was the Artesia Defense, Better yet, it was Artesia's Trevor Whitmire the New Mexico Lobo Baseball Commit that came up with an unbelievable five interceptions on the day. The Artesia Bulldogs will face Hobbs in week two.
Hobbs 28, Gadsden 24
The Hobbs Eagles went to Aderiol Moore on offense and the 5-foot-4, 184 pound Eagle did not disappoint scoring two touchdowns that we know of the help Hobbs knock off Gadsden by four points. The Eagles now 1-0 on the season face the Artesia Bulldogs in week two.
Aztec 40, Los Lunas 27
The Aztec Tigers fought off a tough away crowd and a much improved Los Lunas Tiger team to win by two scores. Aztec's Adam Lucero accounted for three touchdowns and overcame 11 costly penalties that kept many drives moving backwards. "I think we had 26 penalties called on us," Lucero said. "It comes with overcoming adversity," Lucero told the Farmington Daily Times.
Piedra Vista 66, Santa Fe 26
The Piedra Vista Panthers rolled to 40-point victory over the Demons Friday night thanks to a monster performance from sophomore quarterback Isaiah Valdez who threw for 183-yards, four touchdown passes and ran for 61-yards, and scored four three times accounting for seven touchdowns. Santa Fe was led on offense by Jordan Booth-Homer who threw for 182-yards including a 67-yard touchdown pass to Moses Montoya.
Grants 50, Capital 0
The Grants Pirates sailed past Capital 50-0 in the opener and it was Grants' Ryan Ramirez who has the big night for the Pirates. He was 10 of 14 and threw for 105-yards on the night, he also ran for two additional scores.
Portales 26, Robertson 7
The Rams looked like the pre-season number one in Class 3A rolling the Cardinals big time in the second half. Phonix Russell ran for 241-yards and 13 carries and threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to help the Ram's make some week one noise. The Rams out-gained Robertson offensively 427-270 on the night.
Socorro 35, West Las Vegas 8
The Warriors rolled past west in a game that could of been far worse then the score indicates. Socorro running back Ibrahim Maiga ran for 200-yards and scored four touchdowns. Socorro Ray Vaiza ran for over 100-yards and scored once.
St. Michael's 42, Bloomfield 8
The Horsemen rolled past Bloomfield as expected, but was not expected was the junior performance of Horsemen Quarterback Cory Serna who threw for four touchdowns in his quarterback debut helping the Horsemen win their first game of the season.
Eunice 50, Jal 20
The Eunice Cardinals won their Lee County Rivalry Game and won their first game under new head coach Daniel Hutchins. Eunice Cardinal Quarterback Tyler Almager scored six times on the night all through the air and had a 40-yard touchdown run.
Tucumcar 21, Hatch Valley 7
The Tucumcari Rattlers won their first game of the season under new head coach Wayne Ferguson thanks to a big performance from Angelo Montano and Running Back Luke Smith who scored on a 27-yard touchdown run.
Sandia 21, St. Puis X 13
The Matadors turned the ball over four times on Thursday night keeping St. Pius X in the game throughout four quarters. Junior Quarterback Aaron Smith hooked up with Daniel Robertson for Sandia's first touchdown of the season, but St. Pius X fired back when Trey Casaus found Quintin Rizek in the corner of the end-zone to make it a 7-7 ball game. Sandia scored just before half when Daniel Cones, the 6-foot-0, 185 pound broke loose to make it 14-7 going into half. Sandia's final score of the night came when Smith broke loose on a bootleg from 30-yards out to make the 21-7. Stats: of the Game: St. Pius X Quarterback Trey Casaus was 7 of 24 passing on the night, Aaron Smith threw and ran for a touchdown, Daniel cones ran for 155-yards
Mayfield 28, Chapin 27
The Mayfield Trojans jumped out to an impressive 28-7 lead, but the Chapin Huskies rallied back in the second half to give the Trojans an opening week scare. Chapin Quarterback Brandon Moss threw a late touchdown to Seth Gonzales for a 33-yard score with 19 seconds left. A personal four was called against Chapin during the dramatic play moving the game tying PAT back 15-yards and the Chapin kicker missed the PAT which would of sent the game into Overtime. "We shut them down in the first half for the most part and we made plays when it counted in the second half," Michael Bradley told the Las Cruces Sun News. Stat of the Night: Chapin accumulated over 500-yards of offense against Mayfield, the Trojans ran for 208-yards o the night.
El Dorado 26, Las Cruces 23
The Las Cruces Bulldawgs jumped to an impressive 17-7 lead against El Paso Eldorado Thursday night, but the Aztecs would mount an impressive second half comeback to take the lead 20-17 with minutes left in the game. The Dawgs kicked a last minute field goal to send the game into overtime 20-20. Las Cruces kicked a field goal to make it 23-20, but the Aztec's threw a game winning touchdown to end the game 26-23. Stats of the Night: Bulldawgs ran for 255-yards, Xavier Hall ran for 159-yards, Kamyrn Dixon caught for a touchdown and had an interception on defense.
Atrisco 37, Albuquerque 0
The Atrisco Heritage Jaguars won their first ever game of their program's history in big fashion beating Albuquerque 37-0. "It feel great, but our goal isn't to just win one," Atrisco Running Back told the Albuquerque Journal. The Jaguars jumped out to a 31-0 halftime lead thanks to a big night from Sanchez who ran for 66-yards on the night. Atrisco Quarterback Nate Goode threw for 115-yards and ran for 100-yards on the night. The Jaguars face off with Valencia in week two. Stat of the Night: Goode accounted for 215-yards of total offense for the Jaguars.
Valencia 68, Taos 18
The Valencia Jaguar's opening season campaign was nothing short of their week one high expectations. Running Back Noah Brown ran for 165-yards and scored twice, Jude Pepke ran for 103-yards and scored three touchdowns and threw for another, Isaac Gonzales ran for 106-yards on the night helping the Jaguars move to 1-0 on the season. Stats of the Night: Valencia scored every time they touched the football, Valencia Kicker Caleb Crum was 6-for-6 in PAT's and kicked a 38-yard field goal racking up nine special team points on the night.
