ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- West Mesa last finished with a winning record in 2011, a five-year streak of futility Mustangs coach Ron McMath, now in his sixth season at the school, is eager to see end.

Thursday night was a nice start.

West Mesa senior quarterback Gabe Ramirez ran for two touchdowns and threw for three more as the Mustangs started the 2017 season on the right foot by rolling past Del Norte, 34-6, Thursday night at Nusenda Community Stadium. Two of the TD plays were beyond 49 yards.
