Many of the wrestlers featured in the state tournament this year either achieved greatness winning a state title or placed last year in 2009, to earn a good spot in this year's state tournament. The highlight of last year was Rio Rancho's Max Ortega winning his fifth state title at the 5A 140 pound bracket.
He was the second person in New Mexico Wrestling history to ever achieve that feat of greatness. In the process he was one of seven rams to enter the state finals in 2009. The Rams won the 5A state tournament by a margin of 81 points to runner-up Rio Grande. State champions included Jake Williams (103), Matt Nunez (119), Louis Trujillo (130), Chris Rubalcaba (135), Chris Morales (171), and Shea Nolan (215). Other individual state champions at the 5A tournament included Nick Pino (112) of Cibola, Noel Mayo of Rio Grande (125), Alex Ramsey (145) of Las Cruces, Jesus Mesa (152) of Onate, Ray Contreras (160) of Los Lunas, Adam Gonzalez of Eldorado (189), and Jon Padilla (285) of Mayfield.
In the 4A level, Silver City won the Team title, but it was a slow first day with wrestlers being sent to the back side right away, the wrestle backs is how Silver won the state title and they won by an eleven point margin to runner-up Belen. Silver had one individual state champion in Matt Chacon (215). Another bit of history is that Saint Pius X, though they tied for sixth they had their first two state champions in history in Alexis Santana (130) and Tyler Hartom (140).
Volcano Vista also made history with their first three state champions in their school with Eric Montoya (103), Matt Sandoval (152), D'Andre Gonzalez (189), and. Other individual state champions included Dylan Dominguez of Espanola (112), Stevie Garcia of Valencia (119), Derrick Pringle of Aztec (125), Ricky Uribe (135) of Deming, Sam Hollar (145) of Aztec, Bryce Cargile of Belen (160)and Mike Hathcock (171) of Aztec, and Tyler East (285) of Belen.
Finally at the 3A level, Robertson continued right where it left off edging St. Michael's for the team title by a margin of 17 points. Robertson had four individual state champions which included Joseph Dominguez (135), Wally Diaz (145), Daniel Martinez (152), and Dmitri Almanzar (160). On that note Wally Diaz became a four time state champion at the 3A level; Daniel Martinez earned his third straight state title.
Other individual state champions included Raymond Jimenez of Tucumcari (103), Daniel Udero of Cobre (112) who became a two time state champion, Miles Davis of Wingate (119), Xavier De La Torre of Cobre (125), Jess Martinez of St. Michael's (130), Ryan Fought of Tucumcari (140), John Armijo of West Las Vegas (171), Michael Aranda of St. Michael's (189) and Bloomfield's two heavyweights in Issac Duarte (215) and Anthony DeHerrera (285).
