Today, we start to announce the winners of the New Mexico high school football awards. The awards are voted on by fans, media members and NMPreps staff.

2017 SECONDARY PLAYER OF THE YEAR: HUNTER CARDIFF (LA CUEVA HS)

NMPreps.com is happy announce the 2017 New Mexico Secondary Player of the Year winner - Hunter Cardiff. The six-foot senior Free Safety for the La Cueva High School Bears football program in Albuquerque, NM.

The Bears went 11-2 overall and played for the 2017 State Championship. Cardiff played a huge role for the Bears defense this season. The Bears defense was among the best in the state allowing only 183 total points (14 points per game).

Hunter Cardiff had 61 total tackles (42 solo) and 6 interceptions. Cardiff had the most overall points in the ballot (see below).
