Week 7 of the New Mexico High School football season begins Thursday night with a small slate of games followed by the usual potpourri of contests Friday night throughout the state and ending with a serving of some intriguing Saturday afternoon matchups.

Game of the Week: La Cueva (6-0) at Manzano (6-0)

It’s No. 1 vs. No. 2. Doesn’t get any better than that does it?

Polls aside, this game also marks the district opener for both teams, magnifying the importance of what will happen Friday night at Wilson Stadium.

The matchup between quarterback Jordan Byrd and the Manzano offense against the standout La Cueva defense could be the best and most intriguing unit vs. unit battle we’ll see all season. Both are firing on all cylinders.
