It was an exciting opening week of the New Mexico High School football season with hard-fought games throughout the state in all classifications. What did we learn from Week 1? Here are five things:
1. The offenses are way ahead of the defenses right now: It began Wednesday night when Manzano outscored Atrisco Heritage, 48-26, and continued long into Friday night. Around 9:30 p.m. or so, the scores began rolling in: 56-34 (Las Cruces-Eldorado), 52-22 (Cleveland-Onate), 42-21 (Rio Rancho-Mayfield), 56-20 (Centennial-Albuquerque) and 55-14 (Taos-Hatch Valley). Then, after 10 p.m. came the two scores that really raised eyebrows: 60-52 (Los Lunas-Aztec) and 68-54 (Lovington-Chaparral). Saturday, Volcano Vista beat Valley, 48-20. Indeed, the first weekend was filled with high-scoring games. Sure, not every game was a track meet since we had a few 13-12 (Robertson-Estancia) type scores mixed in. But in a majority of the games the winning team scored 30+ points. Clearly, in many situations, the defenses struggled to keep up with the offenses.
