Geographic neighbors headline list of most improved teams in 2017
Week 8: Questions Facing Top 25 Teams
Seven weeks down, Mr. Football Candidates and Contenders
Two of the most improved high school football programs in the state of New Mexico are geographic neighbors situated about 22 miles apart.
A year ago, Lovington (1-9) and Hobbs (2-8) combined for a meager three wins. Entering Week 8 of this season, they have eight victories (4 win apiece) and both teams are tracking to qualify for the playoffs in their respective classifications (Lovington – 5A; Hobbs – 6A).
Despite last Saturday’s loss at Las Cruces, Hobbs’ improvement is tied to one of the most prolific offenses led by bazooka-armed quarterback Gavin Hardison (2,338 passing yards + 64.3 completion pct.) and talented receivers Alec Finney (38 receptions for 716 yards) and Semaj Cotton (34 receptions for 572 yards).
