ARTESIA, N.M. -- Hobbs showed us again Friday night having an experienced senior quarterback with a gunslinger mentality is always helpful when you’re on the road trying to win on the road in one of the toughest environments in the state.

Eagles quarterback Gavin Hardison threw for 622 yards and seven touchdowns as Hobbs outlasted Artesia, 56-49, in a wildly entertaining and penalty-filled game Friday night in front a boisterous capacity crowd at Bulldog Stadium in Artesia’s much-anticipated home opener.

Seven days after Artesia blanked Eddy County rival Carlsbad in the first game of the season, Hardison and his fleet of Eagles receivers scorched the Artesia secondary over and over again, especially in a wild first half that saw Hardison throw five touchdowns as Hobbs grabbed a 35-21 lead at intermission.
