Breaking: The Valencia County News Bulletin has reported that Belen Public Schools will not renew Belen High School Football Coach John Lerma's contact for the 2016 season. Lerma coached eight seasons with the Eagles going 3-7 this past year missing the 5A playoffs.
Lerma ends his coaching career at Belen with a career record of 71-29 reaching the finals in 2009 and in 2014. Lerma had both success in New Mexico at Belen as well as in Texas, being inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor in 2011.
In Texas Lerma won a total of 212-games, combine that with his father E.C. who won 154-games, it's 369 games won on the football field. "I'm very proud of both mine and my father's accomplishments. Not too many fathers and sons can say that," Said Lerma in an interview conducted in 2014.
