ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Albuquerque Public Schools looked into allegations that some La Cueva High School football players were drinking on a team trip. APS made their decision on Tuesday.
A disciplinary committee held a closed-door meeting on Monday to decide what action should be taken against head coach Fred Romero, assistant coach Mike Tixier and trainer Jeff Archuleta.
The three were supervising a team bus headed back to Albuquerque from a state playoff loss to Las Cruces Mayfield on Nov. 26. Someone on the bus came forward that at least one student was drinking alcohol.
APS Superintendent Winston Brooks said at least one of three supervisors knew about the drinking, though he won't say which one. Brooks told News 13 all three should have known and stopped it from happening.
"They were on a school bus, not a convention center," said Brooks. :"They were not in a confined space. I don't think not knowing is a defense."
An APS spokesperson confirmed Romero and Tixier will no longer coach or volunteer coach within the district for the foreseeable future. The two will also be reassigned to other positions within the district.
Brooks placed the three on paid leave on Dec. 2 while they were investigated for possible employee misconduct. Brooks announced on Tuesday that the three coaches would be on unpaid leave until Dec. 13.
La Cueva will be placed on probation for the 2011-2012 athletic season. Superintendent Brooks said he will be monitoring the department on a quarterly basis. If the school violates probation, APS could suspend a team or the entire athletic department altogether. More From KRQE Here
