Onate coach aims to ignite Knights offense by blending old with new
The fast-paced, no huddle, wide-open offense newly hired Onate coach Scott Veliz is bringing with him to Las Cruces combines elements of the old and the new.
There are concepts of the Air Raid and other modern spread schemes (spread option, etc.) blended together in the same mixing bowl with stratagems popular 30 or 40 years ago when football was largely played between the tackles.
It’s an innovative offensive system that has worked wonders for Veliz until now, and one he hopes takes New Mexico High School football by storm.
Best label for it? The power spread.
