The hosting Clovis Wildcats 3-5 and the visiting Sandia Matadors 5-2 battled it out till the bitter end on Friday night in a marquee 5A matchup. The game was close through out and even with 28 seconds to go and a late Sandia score to take the lead, the game was still not over. The Sandia Matadors were able to come back from a 17-0 deficit and would battle back to take the lead in the final seconds of the 4th quarter. However this valiant effort was not enough to stop the Cat's determination and the magic of Leon Williams stadium on Friday night. Kamal Cass, a potential NMPreps.com Mr. Football candidate had a monster game with 270 yards rushing on the night and finished with four touchdowns. Kass would catch the final score of the night with less then 10 seconds to go in the game from 20 yards out to give Clovis a much needed win over a tough 5A opponent. For Sandia the loss is heartbreaking, but the Matadors still have play-off aspirations. Sandia will face off against Manzano in week 9. Clovis is open in week 9 and will face off against Carlsbad on week 10.
Gadsden 31, Onate 24
The Gadsden Panthers, clearly one of the most improved teams of the 2012 season moved to 4-4 on the season and jumped onto the play-off bubble with a win against Onate Friday Night. The Panthers now 1-1 in District Play, were led by Quarterback Aaron Gomez who had 200-yards passing and 119-yards from Isaac Montes, who also finished with three scores on the night. "These guys have lost for so long," Panthers first year coach Roy Gerela said. "We teach that in life if you are accountable and you work hard daily and you have good coaching, good things can happen," Gerela told the Las Cruces Sun News.
Santa Fe 62, Los Alamos 30
The Santa Fe Demons took sole possession of their 2012 play-off hopes with a monster win Friday Night against Los alamos their district 2-4A rival Friday Night. The win was propelled by Santa Fe Senior Running Back Anthony Abeyta who ran for 228-yards and three touchdowns according to the Santa Fe New Mexico. Quarterback Jordan Booth-Homer threw for 88-yards and two touchdowns, and also had two rushing touchdowns bringing his touchdown count to four on the night. The Santa Fe Demons have not the made play-offs since 1986. The Los Alamos Hilltoppers move to 4-4 on the season and were led by 100-yards rushing from Arnaldo Ortiz and 139-yards passing from Underclassmen Bruce Van Etten.
Los Lunas 50, Grants 0
The hosting Los Lunas Tigers and the visiting Grants Pirates faced off in a district 6-4A matchup on Friday night. The Los Lunas Tigers would hand the Grants pirates their 3rd loss of the season after a 50-0 drubbing. The Tigers balanced attack was to much for the Pirates and would lead to Los Lunas is now 2-0 in district play on the yea following the win. Grants falls to 1-1 in district play after they failed to score even a field goal on the night. The Los Lunas Tigers were lead offensively by Chris Wisneski who had over 175 yards passing on the night and would connect with wide receiver Chris Sanchez 3 times for 149 yards and 3 TD's, also helping out was Jalen Chavez who scored twice for the Tigers and rushed for just under 100 yards on the night. Grants will look to bounce back after the week 8 loss and will face off against Valencia in week 9. Los Lunas will be on the road in week 9, and will face off against 2-5 Gallup.
Belen 53, Gallup 0
The hosting Belen Eagles and the visiting Gallup Bengals faced off in a District 6-4A matchup on Friday night. The Belen Eagles would hand the Gallup Bengals their 5th loss of the year and push the Gallup loosing streak to three games. Belen would improve to 1-1 in district 6-4A play after picking up their first district win in lopsided fashion. The Eagles were looking to get back on the winning track after a nasty week seven loss to Valencia county foe Los Lunas who also won in lopsided fashion on the night. For Gallup things do not get easier in week nine as they will host undefeated Los Lunas. Belen will be on the road in week nine against Miyamura who is now 2-5 on the year following a loss in week 8.
La Cueva 41, Carlsbad 21
The hosting La Cueva Bears and the visiting Carlsbad Cavemen faced off on Friday night in a non-district matchup. The Bears would prove just how dominant they can be when they have things rolling their way, and at 6-1 are looking more and more like a final four team with the talent to make a deep run into the play-offs. Carlsbad was plagued by turnovers on the night and quarterback Rodney Holcomb did not have his best showing as he threw 5 interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. The Bears were dominant defensively even though Carlsbad did not play up to expectations the Bears did their job and came away with the victory. Offensively the Bears were lead by Zach Silva who threw for over 210 yards on the night on 12-16 passing, helping him out at the receiving positions was Jarrick Sharp and Chris Thompson two top flight receivers. The Cavemen will have some soul searching to do as they have dropped their 2nd game in a row and are now 4-4 on the season and with another late season emergence of the Clovis Wildcats, the Cavemen are on red alert come districts as they will need key victories over Clovis and Hobbs if they want a seat in the play-offs. La Cueva will face off against district foe Eldorado in week nine. Carlsbad is on the road on week 9 against Hobbs.
St. Pius X 30, Piedra Vista 28
The hosting St. Pius X Sartans and the visiting Piedra Vista Panthers would face off on Friday night in a non district week 8 matchup. St. Pius would hand Piedra Vista their first loss of the season on Friday night, Piedra Vista is now 6-1 following the loss. St Pius moves to 4-4 on the year and following the win they are looking like the team to beat in district 5-4A. The Sartans kicked a field goal with just over 2:00 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter to give the Sartans the lead and would seal the deal in the closing moments of the game with a big interception by Javier Jaramillo to help the Sartan cause. Piedra Vista will look to take out some frustration upon district foe Kirtland Central in week 9. St. Pius X will look to continue their winning streak as they will begin district play in week 9 against Del Norte.
Cleveland 42, Hobbs 0
The visiting Cleveland Storm and the Hosting Hobbs Eagles faced off in a non-district week eight game on Friday night. The Hobbs Eagles continue to struggle on the year and following a 42-0 loss on the night fall to 2-6 on the year. The Eagles couldn't continue their winning ways from week 7 in week 8 as they faced off against a salty Cleveland Storm team. Cleveland improves to 4-3 on the year and are now 4-2 against 5-A opponents. Cleveland was able to accumulate 28 points in the 2nd quarter to open the game up and demoralize their opponent with some hard nosed running by UNM commit Romell Jordan who had over 160 yards on the ground and 4 total touchdowns on the night. The Eagles will get ready to host Carlsbad in week 9 in the first district game for the Eagles of the year. The Storm will face off against Cibola in week 9 and will look to get a vital win if they want to keep their play-off hopes alive in 2012.
Centennial 28, Socorro 21
The Centennial Hawks now 4-3 on the season won an important game Friday Night for two reasons. One the win keeps their play-off bubble dreams alive and two, Head Centennial Coach Aaron Ocampo defeated his younger Brother Damien Ocampo in the first time the two head coaches have ever faced off coaching against one-another. The Hawks who were missing their starting running back Daniel Conklin who suffered a season ending broken leg against Hot Springs last Friday Night were led by a late Queving Redding touchdown run with just seconds left for to put a thrilling mark on the ending.
Atrisco Heritage 44, Rio Grande 0
The visiting Atrisco Jaguars and the hosting Rio Grande Ravens faced off on Friday night in what would be a district 5-5A matchup. The Ravens would be handed their 6th loss of the year in lopsided fashion, Rio Grande is now 1-6 on the year and 0-5 against 5A opponents. Atrisco Heritage is coming off a week seven loss and was looking to get back to their winning ways against a struggling Rio Grande team. Atrisco picks up their 1st district win of the year and improve to 5-2 on the year, the Jaguars are now 1-1 in district play. Leading the way offensively was Nate Goode for the Jaguars and defensively the Jags stepped up as well allowing 0 points and are now allowing 15.14 points per game on the season. Atrisco will host Alb. High in week nine and Rio Grande faces off against Highland in week 9.
Goddard 28, Lovington 0
The Goddard Rockets moved to 7-0 on the season with a shutout against Lovington who dropped to 2-4 this season. On the night the Rockets were led by Anthony Ornelas who passed for 100-yards and Cody French at running back who ran the football for 225-yards on the night. The Rockets are open in week eight before taking on the Artesia Bulldogs on November 2nd.
Volcano vista 39, Eldorado 34 *Thursday NIght
33 points for the Hawks in the 4th quarter made for one of the more memorable comebacks in recent memory in Class 5A as Volcano Vista upset Eldorado. The Hawks trailed 28-6 at the start of the fourth quarter, but never quit and thanks to three Eldorado turnovers, the Hawks turned the end of the game into a night that Volcano Vista Hawks fans will remember forever. The Hawks were led by two touchdown passes by Quarterback Reid Hendricks late in the game, one crucial touchdown reception by Josh Lubhold, a late touchdown run by Dorsett Valdez, and and Justin Perez interception for a touchdown to seal the deal. The Hawks are now 4-3 this season and have handed the Eldorado Eagles their second loss in two weeks as Eldorado moves to 3-3.
Valencia 35, Miyamura 22
The Valenca Jaguars and the Miyamura patriots faced of on Friday night in a district 6-4A matchup. The Valencia Jaguars were slight underdogs going into the matchup as far as team records are concerned. However the Valencia Jaguars knew going into this one that they had more then a punchers chance to come away with the victory. Valencia hands Miyamura their 5th loss of the season and push the Patriots to 0-2 in district play. Valencia is now 2-0 in district play and will look to continue their 2 game winning streak in week 9 against Grants. For Miyamura the road does not get much easier in week 9 as they will play host to a tough Belen team.
Tularosa 50, Lordsburg 0
The Tularosa Wildcats made a big district statement Friday Night trouncing the Lordsburg Mavericks 50-0 to move to 6-2 on the season. The Wildcats were led by Jim Coleman who has had a huge October, as Coleman recorded two interceptions and had over 100 yards receiving with one touchdown catch. According to the Alamogordo Daily Times, the Wildcats would post more than 400-yards off offense and Quarterback Jared Rocha who finish with 150-yards passing with one score.
Roswell 48, Portales 0
The Roswell Coyotes defeated Portales in a no contest match up Friday Night thanks to Hiram McIntyre's three touchdown catches. Roswell Linebacker Larenz Reese returned an interception for a touchdown on the night. Roswell is now 5-3 on the season, while Portales drops to 2-5.
Ft. Sumner 36, Loving 6
The Ft. Sumner Foxes moved to 4-4 on the season thanks to 100-yards rushing from Michael Giannini and 80-yards rushing from Dallas McDaniel who also scored twice on the night. Loving was led by Joel Hernandez who returned a kick for a touchdown.
Bloomfield 48, Kirtland Central 0
The Bloomfield Bobcats routed the Kirtland Central Broncos Friday Night 48-0, nearly ending the game in a mercy rule. The Bobcats now 3-4 on the season were led by Running Back Josh Archiebeque who ran for 230-yards and two touchdowns. Bloomfield Quarterback Bobby Lyon threw for close to 200-yards on the night and two touchdowns according to the Farmington Daily Times.
Las Cruces 45, Alamogordo 13
The Las Cruces Bulldawgs moved to 6-1 on the season after a lack luster start in the first half in which they led just 17-13 at the half. The Bulldawgs then kicked it into high gear and won their second district game of the season thanks big play from JJ Granados who would scored four touchdowns on the night and rush for 100-yards and Quarterback Jonathan Joy who threw for 220-yards and two touchdowns. The Dawgs are now 2-0 in District Play and will take on Gadsden two weeks.
Valley 50, Albuquerque 0
The Valley Vikings led Albuquerque just 7-0 late in the first quarter, but then rattled off 43 points between the second and early third quarter to end the game as a mercy rule district game. The Vikings now 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in District play were led by Quarterback Bo Coleman who threw for over 100-yards and ran for 100-yards, and by Aaron Molina who returned a punt for a touchdown. The Albuquerque Bulldogs are now 0-7 this year and have been outscored by a combined 363-25 this year.
